Ending Period Poverty: How Hiteshi Dutta is Transforming Menstrual Health in Rural India

Purvi Joshi By Purvi JoshiAugust 26, 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

In a country where millions of women still struggle for basic menstrual hygiene, Hiteshi Dutta stands tall as a beacon of change. An award-winning social entrepreneur and one of the Top 10 CSOs in India as recognized by The CEO Magazine (2022), Hiteshi is spearheading a bold mission to eliminate period poverty through her groundbreaking initiative – the Suharth Shakti Campaign.

Through her non-profit, Suharth Foundation, Hiteshi has launched an ambitious and compassionate goal: to reach 1 million underprivileged women in government schools, rural areas, slums, and tribal communities across India within the next three years. The campaign is not just about distributing products—it’s about restoring dignity, health, and empowerment to women who have been left behind in the menstrual health conversation.

Ending Period Poverty with Suharth Shakti Kits

At the heart of this mission lies the Suharth Shakti Kit – a comprehensive solution designed with sustainability and accessibility in mind. Each kit includes a mix of organic sanitary pads, menstrual cups, reusable cloth pads, and crucial menstrual hygiene education. These kits offer women an eco-friendly, dignified, and long-term answer to their menstrual needs.

“Periods should never be a reason for shame, stigma, or missed opportunities,” says Hiteshi. “With the Suharth Shakti Campaign, we’re not only addressing menstrual health but also environmental sustainability and women’s empowerment at the grassroots.”

The campaign is further amplified by the RTM – Right to Menstruation initiative, which allows anyone to contribute to this life-changing work. For just ₹750 a year, a donor can sponsor a woman’s complete menstrual hygiene needs. This low-cost yet high-impact initiative is inviting individuals, corporates, and CSR partners to take a stand for menstrual equity.

    A Multi-Faceted Sustainability Leader

While her work with Suharth Foundation is transformative, Hiteshi’s impact stretches far beyond menstrual health. As a multi-venture entrepreneur, she has launched several powerful platforms that center around sustainability, women empowerment, and ethical consumption.

    • WhatASaree is India’s first direct-to-consumer handloom platform, directly connecting traditional weavers with consumers. The platform champions authentic silk, zero-waste fashion, and celebrates India’s textile heritage while providing a sustainable livelihood to artisans.
    • With Eco Threads, Hiteshi is tackling the mounting crisis of textile waste. The startup not only repurposes discarded fabrics into eco-conscious products but also trains and employs women from marginalized communities to produce them.
    • As the Director and CSO at Bizgaze Limited, she is enabling digital transformation by helping businesses automate their workflows, proving that sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand.
    • Hiteshi also runs Mode27.com, a premium sustainable fashion brand promoting “Elegance for Every Generation,” proving that style and sustainability can co-exist beautifully.

    Recognized Voice and Change-Maker

Hiteshi Dutta’s tireless efforts in social impact have not gone unnoticed. Honored by the Nawab of Hyderabad, she is widely recognized as a thought leader in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), climate change, menstrual health, and sustainable fashion. Her insights are frequently sought at both national and international forums, where she passionately advocates for women’s rights, environmental stewardship, and inclusive development. Currently pursuing an Executive Leadership Program in Digital HR and People Analytics from XLRI, Delhi, Hiteshi continues to strengthen her expertise at the intersection of people, purpose, and progress.

Yet, for Hiteshi, this is more than a profession—it is a personal mission. “When women are educated about their bodies and are given access to sustainable hygiene solutions, it changes everything—from health outcomes to school attendance to confidence,” she says.

    Join the Movement

The Suharth Shakti Campaign is not just a charity—it’s a revolution. And everyone is invited to join. Whether you are an individual who believes in gender equality, a CSR leader seeking meaningful partnerships, or an organization ready to back scalable social change, your support can be the difference in someone’s life.
