Science with a Soul — The Extraordinary Cancer Care Mission of Dr. Gayatri Gogoi

admin By adminJanuary 27, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read

For Dr. Gayatri Gogoi, medicine has never been confined to laboratories or lecture halls. It is a lifelong mission rooted in compassion, innovation, and service. A distinguished Professor of Pathology at Assam Medical College & Hospital, she has emerged as one of Northeast India’s most influential voices in cancer research, genetic diagnostics, and community-based healthcare.

Trained at elite institutions such as Tata Memorial Hospital, ACTREC, and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Gogoi has developed formidable expertise in precision oncology, cancer genomics, molecular pathology, and vaccine-related cancer research. Her primary research focus includes breast cancer, gall bladder cancer, hematological malignancies, and cancer prevention through vaccination, areas of immense relevance to the Indian population.

Her research excellence gained international recognition when the BBC featured her work on identifying an extremely rare genetic mutation in the world’s largest hereditary blind family from Assam. This discovery not only showcased advanced genetic sequencing capabilities from the region but also positioned Dr. Gogoi as a key contributor to rare disease research globally.

Her academic footprint includes over 55 peer-reviewed publications, mentorship of multiple MD and PhD scholars, and leadership roles in more than 19 completed and ongoing research projects. She has received national recognition for her work in cancer genetics, including the Association of Oncologists of North East India Academic Grant (2025) and the Blackbuck Pioneer Researcher Award.

Yet, Dr. Gogoi’s most powerful impact lies beyond academic metrics. As Honorary Program Director of Pratishruti Cancer and Palliative Trust, she has redefined community cancer care in Assam. From free cancer helplines and home-based palliative services to large-scale screening and vaccination drives, her work has touched tens of thousands of lives.

Among her most remarkable achievements is the HPV Vaccination Drive, which not only set a national record but also helped dismantle myths around cervical cancer prevention. Projects such as Pratishruti Suchitra for early breast cancer detection and “Manuhe Manuhor Babe”, supported by ASTEC, promote scientific temper and combat cancer-related superstitions.

A powerful science communicator, Dr. Gogoi has authored books and chapters in English and Assamese, including the first cancer awareness book written by a doctor in Assamese. She has published over 150 vernacular articles, delivered more than 220 community lectures, and directed the acclaimed Assamese documentary “Cancer: A Crossroad Between Science and Perception” (2025).

Honoured with accolades such as the Top 10 Women Leaders in Healthcare & Wellness International Award and the Director General of Police Commendation Award, Dr. Gayatri Gogoi stands as a beacon of ethical, people-centric medicine — where science truly serves humanity.
